Our Story

VIOSENSE is a new take on an old idea: in 1855, optical scientist James Clerk Maxwell invented the first color blind glasses when he theorized that by looking through two lenses with opposing colors, a person with color- blindness could sense an added dimension of color based on the phenomenon of binocular rivalry. More recently since the 1970s, the idea has been attempted with colored contact lenses, however the widespread adoption of Maxwell’s idea has remained elusive.

One late night in the lab, I was experimenting with a new type of polarizing lens when an “ah-ha” moment struck: I discovered the polarizer could induce a color-selective binocular rivalry when viewing a polarized computer screen, enabling the creation of a new kind of eyewear realizing Maxwell’s idea for the modern era of screen-based information and digital media. The result is something I find fascinating and just a bit indescribable. I hope that you will join me on this journey to realize Maxwell’s dream.
